Why you need to visit Northern Minnesota this winter
The land of 10,000 lakes is normally seen as a summer destination because of its wide array of available water activities, but it can be just as exciting in the winter. With high quality winter attire to keep you warm, outdoor activities are a great experience and can even be a good workout.
If you live in Minneapolis, a quick weekend getaway north can be the perfect escape. Below I’ve listed activities to take advantage of Northern Minnesota’s brutal but beautiful winter.
Rent a cabin on Airbnb
There are cozy old cabins all over Minnesota. Get the true winter experience in an old log cabin nestled deep in the forest or at the edge of a lake. For the coziest winter nights find a cabin with a wood burning fireplace or stove and a sauna. Small cabins are not very expensive and can be the perfect weekend getaway without spending a fortune.
Go Snowshoeing
If you love hiking during the summer and miss it during the winter than snowshoeing is perfect for you. It can help you maneuver through deep snow and after a while it’s an intense workout. Having good snowshoes like these can make all the difference. There’s nothing like snowshoeing across a frozen lake!
Snowmobiling
Rent Snowmobiles for a fast speed adventure and whip through the forests or across the frozen lake. Make sure to bundle up as it’s colder in the wind!
Make a cozy meal
You’ll be hard pressed to find a vegan restaurant or grocery store in Northern Minnesota. I recommend packing your own groceries and making meals yourself. A thick bowl of soup would hit the spot.
Bring a Puzzle
Nothing makes me feel cozier in the winter than getting lost in a puzzle. Puzzles can be time consuming and a great way to spend time with your significant other that isn’t watching a movie. I love this puzzle made of recycled paper.
Put the phones away and light a fire
Light a fire and bundle up with blankets, pillows and a mug of tea for a romantic evening in front of the fire. Putting phones away for the weekend can be a great time to reconnect with your significant other and in front of the fire is the perfect way to set the mood.
Build a snowman
Do you want to build a snowman? I had to say it! If the snow is thick enough get outside and build a snowman, have a snowball fight or make snow angels. It’s fun at any age, I promise.
Watch for deer outside
Keep an eye out the windows for deer roaming outside. They tend to roam in small groups and if you’re lucky you’ll see a mom with her babies.
Watch a good movie
If you have nothing else to do at night, watching a movie before bed is a great idea. I recommend Grumpy Old Men to see a classic representation of Minnesota in the winter. Avoid tv shows so you don’t get stuck inside on a binge watching spree.
Minnesota is a beautiful state. I hope you get out there and enjoy it!
